1. HKU WWW Server
Note: The HKU WWW Server will retire from service in end of April 2012. Click here for details on its migration.
The HKU WWW Server is a IBM p550 cluster consists of
two p550 servers supporting web hosting and information services
such as WWW(World-Wide-Web), search engine and FTP. When one system fails, its
node-independent services will be restarted
on the other system automatically. This is a web-hosting system supporting the University home page and is available for use by all departments and student societies in the
University.

2. HKU Web Server Cloud Supporting Departmental Web Sites
The HKU Web Server Cloud is set up in June 2009 to support departmental web sites. The Cloud is a system running Virtual Machines (VMs). Each VM can run a virtual web server, e.g. it looks like the whole server is provided as a departmental server. When one virtual web server fails, the VM will be restarted on another physical server automatically.
A virtual web server will be provided to host the web site of an interested department. Each virtual web server consists of 1 virtual processor, 2GB virtual memory and 50GB virtual disk space (including the operating system and system software). The department would have to co-ordinate the resources amongst all web services in the same department including approval of additional account application on the virtual server.
A department interested in using the web server cloud can fill in our application form CF-106 "Application for Departmental Computer Account" at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.
