HTML Writer User Guide

You can download the HTML editor to your local PC as follows:

  1. You will be able to download the HTML Writer to your harddisk c:\temp at HKU FTP server.
  2. And you need to download this program to decompress it. Open a DOS window, cd c:\temp, type in "pkunzip2 hw9b3all.zip" and exit back to windows.
  3. Remember to transfer all files with extension .DLL and .VBX into windows/system directory. Create a program icon by the Program manager: Select New in File menu, Select program item and browse to find the program htmlwrit.exe in c:\temp sub-directory (or other sub-directory that contain the program HTMLWRIT.EXE)
  4. If the editor is not able to run, then you need to download this self-extracting program containing the Dynamic Link Library vbrun300.dll, and put this library file in windows\system directory. You must execute this program once to extract the program library vbrun300.dll into the windows\system.

HTML Writer is a tool which helps you to compose hypertext home pages and it is easy to use and easy to master.

All you need to do is

  1. type the text, highlight the section you want, choose the button on top, and the effect will be tagged on the text;
  2. save the tagged text to a file in harddisk;
  3. launch the Netscape to view the saved version of your home page.

The File menu contains file manipulation, such as New, Open, Insert, Close, Save, and Save As. Test is used to launch Netscape to view your new home page (here we prefer to save new home page, minimize the HTML Writer and maximize the Netscape to Open File... to view the home page).

The Edit menu contains editing functions, e.g. undo, redo, cut, copy and paste. If you need to select all text, use the Select All command.

The Search menu helps you to find the specific words and replace any words by new word. You can perform forward search as well backward search.

The HTML menu contains submenus of document tags (html, head, title, body), form tags (form, input, select, options and textarea), style tags (header 1..header 6, bold, italic, underline, typewriter, emphasis, strong, sample. code, keyboard, variable, definition, citation and address), paragraph tags ( paragraph, line break, horizontal rule, preformatted, quoted, listing and plain text), hyperlinks tags (inline image, target, local and remote), lists tags (list items, bulleted, numbered, menu, directory, definition, term item and definition item).

You can also remove the tag codes, or repeat the last tag.

The Options menu is required to customise the HTML writer, including the toolbar, status bar, button hints, word wrap, clock display, and especially screen fonts that you are currently using.

The Window menu is used to arrange the windows which contains different home pages. These windows can be arranged as cascade, tile horizontally or vertically. Icons can also be re-arranged. You can select the specific windows for editing.

The Help menu is used to assist you to understand the functions of this hypertext editor. Select the contents, you will be guided to see the explanations of all the menu items that this brief guide is tried to to.

Actions icon on Toolbar

The icons on the Toolbar is a quick tool for appropriate actions. Use this tool set for editing, adding and linking hypertext and images to your home pages. Button hints will be displayed when you place the cursor on the button for a number of seconds.

Status Line

At the bottom of the editing window, you will notice that there is a status line containing information about the status of the editing and keyboard. Time is displayed in the lower right corner of the window.
