FAQ on HKU Connect Email Service for Students

   

HKU Connect is a new email service offered for all new incoming students.  It is an outsourced email service supported by Google.

HKU Connect email account holders will receive a permanent email address "PortalUID@connect.hku.hk" with a 25GB mail quota hosted on Google.  This account will be kept for use by students after graduation.   

1. Email Address, User Name and Password

Your Email address:

<Portal UID>@connect.hku.hk
(you can also use the simplified email address PortalUID@hku.hk as emails will be automatically forwarded from PortalUID@hku.hk to PortalUID@connect.hku.hk for current students)

Sender Email address: <Portal UID>@connect.hku.hk 
User Name: HKU Portal UID
Password: HKU Portal PIN

Web

Students: HKU Portal -> MyEmail tab
Graduates: http://webmail.hku.hk  

(If you are unable to access your email from HKU Portal using Internet Explorer, please follow the guidelines available at https://ids.hku.hk/idp/shib_faq1.html to configure your browser)

 

IMAP

https://mail.google.com/support/bin/static.py?page=ts.cs&ts=1668960

Incoming mail server: imap.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
User name: <Portal UID>@connect.hku.hk
Password: <user password>  

Note:   IMAP requires SSL on port 993
           SMTP requires TLS on port 587
           Outgoing server requires authentication (username and password same as               incoming mail server)

Note: For IMAP and POP3, user must enable them in Gmail settings using the Web interface before use. To enable IMAP and POP3, please refer to:

3. Change your language in Calendar, Contacts and Document


Google will setup your language in Calendar, Contacts and Docs based on your location. If you are accessing the service in Hong Kong, the language will default to Traditional Chinese.

To change the language, please follow the following steps:


a)    Change user language for Calendar:
 
       -  From the mail interface, click Calendar at the top left of the page
       -  Click the Gear icon at the top right of the page, next to your username
       -  Then choose the the first option
 
       -  Click on the first dropdown and choose English
       -  At the top or bottom of the page, click the left-hand button to save your changes. 
          

 

 
b)   Change user language for Contacts:
       -  From the mail interface, click Contacts at the top left of the page
       -  Click the Gear icon at the top right, next to your username
       -  Then choose the the first option

 
       -  Click on the first dropdown and choose English
       -  At the bottom of the page, click the left-hand button to save your changes.
 

 
c)   Change user language for Documents:
 
       -  From the mail interface, click Documents at the top left of the page
       -  Click the Gear icon at the top right, next to your username
       -  Then choose the the first option
 

       -  Click on the first dropdown and choose English
      -   At the bottom of the page, click the left-hand button to save your changes.

5.  HKU Connect Email Service for Graduates

Students using the HKU Connect email service can continue to use it after graduation.

  1.  The email address <Portal UID>@connect.hku.hk and its PIN will remain unchanged.
  2. The simplified email address PortalUID@hku.hk and the auto-forwarding rule from PortalUID@hku.hk to PortalUID@connect.hku.hk will become invalid after graduation.
  3. All emails, contacts and data stored under the HKU Connect email account will be retained after graduation.
