How to configure Windows Mail in Windows Vista for Email? (for roaming user)

Note: The following setup applies for those roaming users who have to send email using Internet Service Provider (ISP) network and is applicable only if their ISP does not block the outgoing SMTP port (TCP 587).

1. Open Windows Mail by clicking the Start button => All Programs => Windows Mail.

2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Accounts.

3. Click Add button.

4. Select Email Account and click Next.

5. Type in your Display Name: this is the name that your recipients will see in the "From" field of e-mails that you send. Click Next.

6. Enter your HKU email address and click Next.

6. Enter your name and email address when prompted.  From the Options listed below, choose “IMAP” to view and manage the mail on the server.

   enter hkusuc.hku.hk as incoming mail server for your HKUSUC mail account
    enter hkusu1.hku.hk for your HKUSU1 mail account or
    enter hkucc.hku.hk for your HKUCC mail account
    enter hkucc1.hku.hk for your HKUCC1 (Exchange for Staff) mail account
  

    For Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name, enter smtproam.hku.hk

    Check the box next to Outgoing server requires authentication. Click Next.

NOTE: If you select POP3 mode, all your emails will be downloaded from the email server to your local folders in Windows Mail and you can no longer access your emails via HKU Portal/WebMail. It will be very difficult to move your emails back to the email server.


7. Enter your UID in the E-mail username field and Portal PIN in the Password field. Click Next.

8. Click Finish.

9. In the Internet Accounts setup window, select your HKU account and click the Properties button

10. Go to Advanced tab, Check the checbox This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

11. Change Outgoing mail (SMTP): from 25 to 587. Click OK.

12. When you send the first message using outgoing email server smtproam.hku.hk, the following warning will be prompted. Click Yes to accept the certificate.

When you are done and you should have a working email client that sends and receives emails for you.
