Q1. What is Software Asset Management System (SAM)?
To facilitate departments in keeping track of their software licenses acquired to ensure legitimate use of computer software, this Software Asset Management (SAM) system is being set up. The system will provide two functions:
- Maintain updated inventory records for departments' software licenses.
- Provide a tool for identifying software installed in individual PCs.
This SAM system will help to keep track of software installed in various PCs which belong to the Department, Facilities, University which run on MS Windows operating system.
Q2. Do I need to scan all computers used by me including notebooks?
Yes, all computers or notebooks which are owned by HKU should be scanned.
Q3. What Operating Systems are supported?
The Software Asset Management System supports Microsoft Windows Operating Systems.
For example Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003 and Server 2008.
Q4. What version of Internet Explorer is supported?
This SAM system supports Internet Explorer (IE) version 7 and 8.
Q5. Can I use Firefox or other web browser to access the SAM system?
The "Scanning" function only supports Internet Explorer (IE), so please scan your computer using IE.
Q6. Do I need to download any scanning software or tools?
User does not need to download any scanning software or tools. Please follow the instruction shown on screen after login the Sofware Asset Management System.
Q7. The scan computer page still can't be displayed after I updated my Registry settings?
If you are using IE 7 on Windows Vista, you need to change the following settings:
- Click "Tools" --> "Internet Options" -> "Security" Tab -> "Local intranet" and uncheck "Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)" -> "OK" then close and restart IE.
- Reset IE security setting to default value after scanning your PC.
Q8. How to start the scan?
Q9. How to handle unclassified items?
- If you have valid license of these software programs, either purchased by yourself, developed by yourself or software bundled with your personal devices (e.g. mobile phone), click on the "PL" button to add them to Personal License and enter the corresponding information.
- If the software is purchased by your department, please put "departmental license" in the "Remarks" field.
- If you know that they should be "freeware" or "shareware", please provide the related information (e.g. software name, developer information) in the "Remarks" field.
- Otherwise, you have to "Remove" or "Un-install" them and rescan your computer again.
Q10. How to reset IE security setting to default value?
Click "Tools"
-> "Internet Options"
-> "Security" Tab
-> "Reset all zones to default level" button
-> "OK" button
Then restart IE to make the change.
