Make sure your LAN account-name/password are correct. If your PC server is managed by your department, you should contact your department's computer technician. If your PC server is managed by the Computer Centre, then call our help desk at 2859-2480 or the operators at 2859-2496.

If a different PC Server name is displayed on login, then login using servername/account-name, instead of simply the accountname e.g.: login hkupc2/account-name

Report the network problem by calling network maintenance at 2859-2774 or report on-line via
HKU Portal -> Services -> Computer Services -> Network Problem Report

• The server or network may be down due to maintenance. 
• Call the help desk to enquire the network status at 2859-2480.

Your IP address must be unique on the network. When another person uses the same IP address as yours, you will get an IP-conflict alert from the system. Note down the network card number (hardware address) of the other user and report to the Help Desk at Run Run Shaw, Room 104 (tel. 2859-2480) or send email to ithelp@hku.hk

Query the network card number (hardware address) of the other user as follows:
In Windows XP, click: Start, Settings, Control Panel,
double click on Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, System Log,
right-click on the Error icon (in red) and select Properties,
the network card number of the other user will be displayed in the error description window.

Note: For users of ACEnet, Wireless LAN and Hallnet: You must set your network configuration to select 'Obtain an IP address automatically'.

You need a network point installed at your site. Visit the Computer Centre forms page and look for "CF-59 TCP/IP PC Registration Form". Fill out the form and send it to the Computer Centre.

This message is caused by your PC's computer names clashing with another same name on the Internet. You have to change your computer name as follows:

For WinXP:  For Start Menu (Default):
Click "Start", right-click My Computer... properties...Computer Name, click the "Change..." button, then change your computer name.

For WinXP:  For Classic Start Menu:
Right-click "My Computer" on desktop...properties...Computer Name, click the "Change..." button, then change your computer name.

For Win98/ME:
Click My Computer...control panel...network...identification.  Then change your computer name.  

Users are not recommended to share files by peer-to-peer networking approach, as this will introduce a lot of network security issues. A machine with improper network configuration or running an operating system can be open to network hackers or attackers.

Department staff can use PC file servers provided by the Computer Centre for sharing their files.
