You need a HKUSUA account and password to login a PC in the labs.  The HKUSUA account is automatically created for all new students at the time of registration at HKU.

The login screen keeps saying my password is wrong
You may hit the <Enter> key too many times or too fast in logging on to the PC system.  Restart the PC, enter your HKUSUA account name and password only when prompted, and press any key once only when prompted.

For PC systems, Chinese windows is available in all the PC labs in the Computer Centre. Select "CWIN" at logon.

For host systems, you can use the Telnet program (which can show Chinese) in the Computer Centre Software folder (in the desktop).

Chinese Word documents cannot be opened with WORD in English Windows.
You should load the Chinese WORD program in Chinese Windows available in all the PC Labs to work on a Chinese Word file.

Make sure you use the same MS Office version to open a document as the one on which your document is created. For example: a Word 2007 file cannot be read with Office 2003.
Solution: Convert the file to Word 97-2003 Template format. See Q2 of Office 2007 FAQ.

A filename with Chinese characters cannot be opened by C-WORD6.  Rename it under C-Win95 to a non-Chinese filename.

Send a request for software/hardware installation to the Computer Centre. This is a chargeable service.

The system enables non-Unicode programs to display menus and dialogs in their native language on Windows XP.  However, this affects the program "Microsoft Equation 3.0" when "Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R)" is selected.  This bug will be solved with the following solution: Click Windows Start => Control Panel => Regional and Language Options => click on the Advanced tab.
At the Language for non-Unicode programs box, select Chinese (Taiwan) and then click OK.

In Windows, click Start => Settings => Control Panel => Administrative Tools => Services => Messenger => change startup type to manual, and click the Stop button.

Note: Windows Vista does not include Windows Messenger.
