Q1. Where are the laser printers in the PC Laboratories?
The laser printers are in Run Run Shaw
Room 103, Run Run Shaw Room 104 and Library Old Wing Room 134. There are 5
black and white printers and 1 color printer at Run Run Shaw Room 103 and Library Old Wing Room 134. There is 1 black and white printer at Run Run Shaw Room 104. You must have an HKU Portal account to print to
the laser printers in the PC labs.
Q2. Why can I NOT print to a network printer in the PC laboratories?
- Check your PAPER SIZE is set to A4. Click on menu File => Page Setup => Paper and select Paper Size to A4.
- Check your PRINT BUDGET. On the left-hand menu of http://www.itservices.hku.hk, click PC Lab. Printing => Printing Quota Enquiry.
- Check your PRINT JOB STATUS. On the left-hand menu of http://www.itservices.hku.hk, click PC Lab. Printing => Printing Jobs Management.
- Check your PRINTER SETTINGS. Click on My Computer => Control Panel => Printers and Faxes, right-click the icon for the printer you want to use, and make sure your printer is Set As Default Printer and Ready for printing.

- Check document for non-standard (unprintable) fonts.
- Check that the FILE SIZE of your document does not exceed
2MB. Click on menu File => Properties => General and make sure your file size is less than 2MB.
- Check the margin of the document is not too large or too narrow. Click
on menu File => Page Setup =>Margins and select the options you want.
The printer cannot print files with Chinese filename
or long filename.
English Windows will not recognise a filename containing
Chinese characters, and will not print that file.
Change the filename and delete the Chinese characters and
then it will print.
Q3. How to print a document in WORD?
For non Fuji-Xerox Printers
- Select the right printer queue with Print Manager in
Main program group, or select menu File => Print from
the menu bar.
- If you are not connected to the network printer, you
must quit Windows and reboot again to re-connect to network.
- Print document by selecting menu File => Print.
- Select A4 paper size by clicking menu File => Page Setup => Paper and select Paper Size to A4.

Q4. How can I print on the ACEnet using notebook computers?
ACEnet/WLAN users can print to the network laser
printers ( A4-size paper) in the PC Laboratories at Room 103,
Run Shaw Building and Room 134, Library Building, Old Wing.
Notes :
- No printing from Macintosh notebook computers in ACEnet
is supported.
- Printing units will be deducted from the printing budget
of your account according to the following rates:
- 1 unit for a page on a black-and-white printer for single-side printing
- 1.6 units for a sheet on a black-and-white printer for double-side printing
- 10 units for a page on a color printer
- Users can enquire his printing budget by visiting the left-hand menu of http://www.itservices.hku.hk, click PC Lab. Printing => Printing Quota Enquiry.
- User can check all print queue status by visiting the left-hand menu of http://www.itservices.hku.hk, click PC Lab. Printing => Printing Jobs Management.
Q5. How to print multiple pages on a single sheet in PC Laboratories?
User should choose the setting of mutliple pages printing option in the applications instead of at the printer.

Q6. How to print a postscript file ?
- Create your postscript file first (in Word, PowerPoint ... etc) by clicking menu File => Print, select the printer in the Name box, and then select Print to file check box.
- In the File name box in the Print to file dialog box, type a file name.

Q9. Where can I purchase additional LASER PRINTING UNITS for printing in the PC labs?
The Computer Centre will allocate 100 laser-printing
units to all undergraduate students at the time of account creation. When they are used up, you can purchase
more printing units by Octopus Card.
You must wait 10 minutes before you can use the newly
added printing units.
You can purchase printing units by Octopus Card. Printing units can be purchased using Octopus card at Room 104 of Run Run Shaw Building or Room 134 of Old Library Building. The rate is shown below:

Non Fuji-Xerox printers
- 1 unit for a page printed from a black and white printer.
- 1.6 units for a sheet printed from a black and white printer dedicated for double-side printing.
- 10 units for a page printed from a color printer (including black and white, color or blank pages).

- $0.20 per page using single-side printing
- $0.40 per sheet using double-side printing

Q11. Where can I get Double-sided printing in the PC labs?
Select the appropriate printer in the software being used.
For example, in MS Word, click menu File => Print then
select the printer for 2-side printing as shown below:

It is advisable not to print PDF files from inside a web browser because PDF files can take a very long time loading into a browser and may crash your PC.
To print a PDF file, please do the followings:
- Save the PDF file directly to your PC.
- Right-click on the Download link and select the option that says Save Target As (Internet Explorer) or Save Link As (Firefox).
- Open Adobe Reader program and load the PDF file.
- Print file by selecting menu File => Print.
- Print 1-2 pages at a time. DO NOT print the whole PDF file because it may take a long time.
If you have a problem printing PDF files using the Acrobat
Reader program, please try using the GSView program to
print PDF files.

Q16. How to convert a Microsoft Office file to a PDF file?
- Click on menu Adobe PDF from the menu bar
- Select Convert to Adobe PDF
- Save your file as .pdf file.

Q18. How to Print Multiple PDF Pages Per Page?
1. Open the pdf file with Adobe Reader. If the file is embedded in the web browser, please save the file to the Desktop first, and open the file with Adobe Reader. Please do not directly print the file from the web browser interface.
2. Click File => Print => Print Setup, select Landscape orientation.
3. Click File => Print.
4. Select Multiple pages per sheet from the Page Scaling drop down box.

5. Select the number of PDF pages to be printed per a page from the Pages per Sheet drop down box.
6. To customize the number of PDF pages printed per a page select Custom.
7. From the Page Scaling and chose the number of pages in the two boxes to the right.

8. You can also change the order of the pages using the Page Order drop down box.
