If you cannot access a certain website because pop-up is blocked in your IE browser, right click or double click on the yellow bar near the URL to enable "temporarily allow the pop-up". If you wish to enable pop-up windows in your browser at all times, then click Tools->Pop-up Blocker->Turn Off Pop-up Blocker.
Click View-> Toolbars-> turn on "Standard Buttons, Address Bar, Links" and turn all others off.

If you have installed the Acrobat Reader 7.05, it will install the Yahoo Tool Bar by default and enabled the "pop up blocker" which is different from the winXP SP2 pop-up blocker. So, if your WinXP was upgraded to SP2, two pop-up blockers will be in effect.
Solution: Uninstall "Yahoo Toolbar" by clicking Start-> "Control Panel" -> "Add or Remove Program" or,
In the Yahoo Toolbar (as shown below), click the "pop up blocker" icon. Ensure the Pop-up Blocker is disabled or unchecked.

If you have installed the Google Toolbar, you can click the IE 'View' button -> 'Toolbars' -> untick 'Google'
to disable its effect.

How can I enable javascript in my IE browser?

If you encounter problems in accessing some of our portal applications or webmail, try enabling the javascript in your IE browser as follows:

1. In IE browser, click Tools-> Internet Options-> Security
2. Click the Custom Level button
3. Scroll down the window until you see the heading "scripting"
4. Click "enable" on active scripting, allow paste.., java applets
5. Click OK

You should check the DNS settings in your PC as at "How to configure the DNS or TCP/IP"?

To search for specific topics, click the SEARCH icon in the browser menu .
Select the search engine of your choice e.g. http://www.google.com  or www.altavista.com
Input your seach string using boolean operators e.g. (and, or, +, -) to narrow down your search.

If you have Chinese Windows, you can read Chinese on the web. Or, you can set your IE browser by clicking View -> Encoding -> select the type of Chinese language.

Multimedia files are generally of three types - Quick Time format, Real format and Microsoft multimedia format. You need the Quick Time player to play Quick Time files, the Real Player to play Real formats, and the Windows Multimedia Player to play MS multimedia files. You may have to download the appropriate player from the Internet and install it on your PC.  

If you are seeing old information, you need to clear your browser cache.
In IE: click Tools=> Internet Options=> General=> Delete Files=> Clear History
In Netscape 4.7 click Edit=> Preferences=> Advanced=> Cache=> Clear Memory Cache

To clear the autocomplete of web forms and passwords:
In IE: click Tools=> Internet Options=> Content=> AutoComplete=> Clear Form or Clear Password
 

You must download and install the software "winframe" in order to be able to access the CD-Roms in the library.  Click the Download link at

and install it on your PC. Then you must quit all sessions of the Netscape browser and re-start Netscape in order for Winframe to take effect.

PDF files are scanned text files that must be read with the Acrobat reader. If you encounter a problem in reading PDF files in a webpage, you can do either of the following:

(1) You can save the PDF file onto your disk and then launch the Acrobat program in your PC and click File...Open to open the saved PDF file.

(2) Use the Acrobat Reader as a Helpder Application, i.e. Acrobat Reader will be opened in a separate window, not inside the browser. In Acrobat Reader 6.0 click Edit -> Preferences -> Internet, uncheck "Display PDF in browser".

The web browser can open many other file types (e.g. .dat, .doc, .pdf etc.)  depending on whether a file type is defined in the applications list. You can define the application to use for each file type as follows:

Windows Explorer, click Tools=> Folder Options => File Types=> add/change the file type and the application to use for that file type.

Internet Explorer, click Tools=> Internet Options => Programs=> add/change the file type and the application to use for that file type.

Netscape, click Edit=>Preferences=> Applications=> New Type=> add/change the file type and the application to use for that file type.

One of the way to improve web accessibility is to create "Alternative Text" for images in the webpage. You can follow the procedure to create the "Alternative Text" using Microsoft Expression Web. The procedure for other web editing softwares are similar.

1. Place the cursor where you would like the image to appear.
2. From the menu, click Insert => Picture => From File...
   
3. The Insert Image Window should now appear:
   
4. Browse and select the image you would like to insert into your webpage.
5. When you are finished, click the Open button.
6. You will be prompted to enter Alternate text for the image. The alt attribute tells the reader what he or she is missing on a page if the browser can't load images. The browser will then display the alternate text instead of the image. It is a good practice to include the alt attribute for each image on a page, to improve the display and usefulness of your document for people who have text-only browsers or people with visual impairment.
