FAQ for users using http://web.hku.hk

Q1. What is the host name of the individual webpage service?
A1. web.hku.hk is the official server name to serve the individual webpage service http://web.hku.hk. The URL of your individual website is http://web.hku.hk/~yourUID.

Q2. How can I connect to my UNIX account on web.hku.hk ?
A2. You can connect to web.hku.hk by either sftp or ssh program with your HKU Portal UID (account name) and PIN (password).

Q3. Will the Computer Centre copy all the files from the old server (HKUSUA) to the new web.hku.hk system on the migration date March 1, 2011?
A3. The Computer Centre will copy all files under the "public_html" folder in your HKUSUA account to the new server on March 1, 2011, but files outside the "public_html" folder would not be copied. You can use SFTP to transfer those files. (See Q2.)

Q4. Will the new web server behave the same as the old web server (HKUSUA)?
A4. Some features, i.e. CGI, may not be supported on the new server. You can have a health check by visiting http://nweb.hku.hk/~yourUID before 1st March 2011.

Q5. What are the versions of Apache and Perl in the new web server?
A5. The new server has Apache/2.2.11 (Unix) and Perl, v5.8.8 built for x86_64-linux-thread-multi. While the original HKUSUA system has Apache/2.0.58 HP-UX_Apache-based_Web_Server and Perl, v5.8.5 built for PA-RISC2.0 .

Q6. Do I still have the same disk quota on the new web server?
A6. You will have the same disk quota on the new web server as on the HKUSUA before 1st March 2011. To check your disk quota after migration, please refer to http://www.itservices.hku.hk/faq/www/web_author.htm#q18.

Q7. Can I host my departmental web site on web.hku.hk?
A7. web.hku.hk is only for individual web pages. For departmental web site, you should apply for a departmental computer account by filling in application form no. CF-106 available at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.

Q8. Can I host my student society web site on web.hku.hk?
A8. web.hku.hk is only for individual web pages. For student society web site, you should apply for a student society webmaster account by filling in application form no. CF-107 available at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.
