Getting
Started
This page provides you with a quick summary
of services provided by the Computer Centre. To find out how
to use these services in details, please refer to the Computer
Handbooks. If you encounter a problem, visit the
FAQ links to see the
Frequently Asked Questions on these services or call our hotline
2859-2480.
The HKU Portal
System
The HKU
Portal is a web-based interface to all the computer services
and information that you require. You can access the Library's
portal resources, web-based email, on-line courses, personal
records, administrative data, teaching and learning resources,
research information and other on-line services provided by
various departments with a single sign-on.
Every registered member of the University is allocated a
unique UID (user identification) for accessing
the HKU Portal and
various host computer accounts.
All students have their UID pre-created
for them. Staff members can
create their own UID on-line by clicking
on this link or go to the General Office at the Run Run Shaw
Building, Room 223.
For all other host computer accounts,
read more details in The
Computer Services Handbook and apply at the General
Office located in Room 223, Run Run Shaw Building.
Network Services
The Computer Centre provides the following
network services:
The
HKU Campus Network connects to all the host computers
in the HKU campus and to the Internet. Staff and students
can access the Internet from their offices and the PC laboratories
respectively.
The
ACEnet is an Access-Everywhere-Network environment with
network points distributed throughout the campus so users
can connect to the HKU network and the Internet with their
notebook computers.
WiFi provides a wireless local area network connection to the HKU
network and the Internet from lecture halls and classrooms
and certain open podium areas on the main campus.
The HallNet provides network connection to the HKU network
and Internet from the rooms in the student residential halls.
The HKUVPN
(Virtual Private Network) allows access to the HKU campus
network from external or broadband networks.
Microcomputer
Facilities
The Computer Centre provides a large
number of microcomputer systems (mostly PC's) distributed
in various locations across the campus for use by all University
staff and students. To use the microcomputers, you need to
have an account on the HKUSUA computer.
Find out the
locations and opening hours of the student labs at our
web site. Helpdesk
General consultation in using facilities
and services of the Computer Centre is available from the
Helpdesk.
During non-office hours, try our other
