Procedure to configure Nokia (Symbian 60 Fifth Edition) to support Universities WiFi

A. Pre-requisite

To access Universities WiFi, you must:

  • Must be a current HKU student or staff with valid HKU Portal account.
  • For HKU Portal account created before 5 June 2009, register to enable Universities WiFi access by login HKU Portal => Campus Information Services => Central IT Services => Register to use WiFi service.
  • For HKU Portal account created on or after 5 June 2009, no registration is required. Please follow configuration procedures below.
  • Ensure the Nokia smartphone supports WiFi connection.

B. Installation and Connection Procedure

This section describes the configuration of the generic Nokia (Symbian 60 Fifth Edition) smartphone and is based on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic smartphone. Depending on the models of the smartphone, the settings may be different. For other models, please consult Nokia or refer to the user manual of your smartphone.

  1. select the Menu, then select Tools, and then Settings application.

  2. Select the Connectivity menu, then select Destinations
       


  3. Then choose Access Point (Add new acc. pt.),

  4. For Automatically check for available access points?

    If Universities WiFi WiFi network is available, select Yes and then select Universities WiFi from the WLAN network list.

    If Universities WiFi WiFi network is not available, select No and then select Wireless LAN for access point type and then enter Universities WiFi and press OK.



  5. Go back to the menu and select Internet.

  6. Select Universities WiFi.

  7. Enter the following settings for the connection:
    • Connection name: Universities WiFi (case-sensitive)
    • Data bearer: Wireless LAN
    • WLAN network name: Universities WiFi (case-sensitive)
    • Network status: Public
    • WLAN network mode: Infrastructure
    • WLAN security mode: WPA/WPA2
    • Homepage: Leave as None
    • Use access point: Leave as Automatically

  8. Select WLAN security settings, enter the followings:
    • WPA/WPA2: EAP
    • WPA only mode: off

  9. Select EAP plug-in setting



  10. You will now be presented with a list of EAP protocols. Only EAP-PEAP should be enabled by selecting Options and then Enable. All other protocols should be disabled by selecting Options and then Disable.



  11. Now select EAP-PEAP, enter the following settings for EAP-PEAP:
    • Personal certificate: (not defined)
    • CA certificate: Equifax Secure Certificate Authority  
    • User name in use:User defined
    • User name: yourUID @hku.hk
    • Realm in use: User defined
    • Realm: Leave as bank
    • Allow PEAPv0: Yes
    • Allow PEAPv1: Yes
    • Allow PEAPv2: No

  12. Press the Right Arrow at the top of the screen to go to EAP-PEAP settings.

  13. Only EAP-MSCHAPv2 should be enabled by selecting Options and then Enable. All other protocols should be disabled by selecting Options and then Disable.



  14. Press EAP-MSCHAPv2 and enter the following settings for EAP-MSCHAPv2:
    • User name: yourUID@hku.hk
    • Prompt password: No
    • Password: enter your HKU Portal PIN



  15. The configuration is completed. Select Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Wireless LAN to connect to Universities WiFi WiFi network.

C. Security Note

Since HKU Portal UID and PIN are employed to login at Universities WiFi, as a better password security measure, you would be asked to change your HKU Portal PIN if you have not changed it for six months.
