Procedure to configure Windows Vista to support Universities WiFi

A. Pre-requisite

To access Universities WiFi, you must:

  • Ensure that Wi-Fi LAN Card is WPA-compliance.
  • Update the latest WLAN driver from vendor.
  • For HKU Portal account created before 5 June 2009, register to enable Universities WiFi access by login HKU Portal => Campus Information Services => Central IT Services => Register to use WiFi service.
  • For HKU Portal account created on or after 5 June 2009, no registration is required.

B. Configuration Procedure (To be done once only)

The following is a sample procedure on Windows Vista PC configuration for enabling Universities WiFi:

  1. In Windows Vista ,
    • Click Windows Start
    • Click Control Panel
    • Click Classic View in Control Panel Home.
    • Click Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Under the Tasks menu,
    • Click Manage wireless networks.
    • Click Add.

  3. Click Manually create a network profile,
    • Type in Universities WiFi in the Network name field ("Universities WiFi" is case-sensitive. Don't just type all letters in lower case or upper case).
    • Select WPA-Enterprise from the Security type drop-down menu. (Note: Both WPA-Entreprise and WPA2-Entreprise are supported in HKU. WPA-Entreprise may be more suitable or compatible for users of other Universities.)
    • Select TKIP from Encryption type drop-down menu.
    • Click Next.

  4. In the Manually connected to a wireless network window,
    • Select Change connection settings.

  5. In the Universities WiFi Wireless Network properties window,
    • In the Connection tab,
    • Un-check Connect automatically when this network is in range.

  6. Click the Security tab.
    • Select Protected EAP (PEAP) from the Choose a network authentication method drop-down menu.
    • Un-check Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network.
    • Click Settings…

  7. In the Protected EAP Properties window,
    • Check Validate server certificate.
    • Check connect to these servers and type ‘802.1x.hku.hk
    • Check Equifax Secure Certificate Authority.

      (Note: If you cannot find Equifax Secure Certificate Authority on your PC, please refer to procedure to download and install Equifax Secure Certificate Authority at
      http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/networks/wifi/rootcert/ )

    • Check Do not prompt user to authorize new servers or trusted certification authorities.
    • Select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP V2) from Select Authentication Method drop down menu.
    • Click Configure.

  8. In the EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window,
    • Un-check Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
    • Click OK three times to close the popup windows.
    • Click Close.

C. Connection Procedure (Connect to Universities WiFi)

  1. In Window Vista,
    • Click Windows Start
    • Click Connect To.
    • Select and Click Universities WiFi from Wireless Network Connection.
    • Click Connect.

  2. In the Connect to a network window,
    • Click Enter/Select additional log on information.

  3. In the Enter Credentials window,
    • Type in your HKU Portal UID in the format of UID@hku.hk in the User name field.
    • Type in your HKU Portal PIN in the Password field.
    • Leave the Logon domain blank.
    • Click OK to logon.

D. Security Note

Since HKU Portal UID and PIN are employed to login at Universities WiFi, as a better password security measure, you would be asked to change your HKU Portal PIN if you have not changed it for six months.
