Most courses are open to HKU staff and students free of charge. Some courses are provided by a course vendor and a fee is charged for these courses (e.g. the Microsoft Office series and other PC software) . Click on the course number to see the description of each course.

Courses on Support on Electronic CoursesIntroduction to WebCT (Web Course Tool)
This 2-hour course will discuss the basic functionalities provided by WebCT from a student's point of view to give participants some feelings on what WebCT can do for their course. e.g. browsing course materials, attempting on-line quizzes, using bulletin boards.
WebCT Course Designer's Basic WorkshopThis 4-hour course will cover steps for course designers (staff members who actually prepare courses on WebCT) to post lecture materials on WebCT, and to perform customization on course homepages.
Pre-requisites: Introduction to WebCT, Basic HTML Editing.
WebCT Course Designer's Advanced WorkshopThis 2-hour course will cover more advanced features for course designers, e.g. preparing on-line quizzes, checking statistical data, managing student records.
Pre-requisites: WebCT Course Designer's Basic Workshop.
Courses on HKUESDEC-SignForm Training WorkshopCourses on BioinformaticsEC-SignForm (Electronic Contract-Signing Form) is a web-based application that helps departments to easily convert their paper-based forms to paperless web-based form with digital signature support.
Workshop participants will have hand-on exercise on:
Intended participants: Departmental Technical Staff, e.g. PC/Network Support Staff
- how to design an html form for EC-SignForm using Dreamweaver or MS Frontpage,
- how to upload and enable the html form to EC-SignForm,
- how to design acknowledgement and reply email templates for replying to the users who fill in an on-line form,
- how to process a user-submitted digitally signed form,
- how to do housekeeping job on the submitted data.
Pre-requistie: Basic HTML Editing
Wireless Access to HKUESD ServicesThis 1.5 hour course introduces to the audiences the concepts of public key infrastructure (PKI) technology for digital signature and “Safe Connect”. “Safe Connect” is a server assisted PKI technology developed by the University’s E-Business Technology Institute (ETI) at the support of Government ITF funding. It is a technology that enhances wireless security by enabling mobile devices to process open standard X.509 digital certificates with or without going through a gateway that does PKI calculations. How to install the HKU digital certificate (HKU-Cert) private-key to a Java phone will be demonstrated. Audiences are welcome to bring their Java phones and HKU-Cert CD to do the installation.
Introduction to EMBOSSCourses on Web Page Browsing and AuthoringThis is a 3-hour course on the introduction of EMBOSS (European Molecular Biology Open Software Suite).
Course outline:
- Starting EMBOSS in BIOINFO server
- Main programs in EMBOSS
- Exercises on: retrieving multiple sequences, comparing sequences, getting opening reading frame, amino acid properties, hydrophobicity profiles, displaying aligned sequences.
- Getting online help from the Internet.
Introduction to SRS
This is a 3-hour course on the introduction of the SRS(Sequence Retrieval System).
Content include:
Exercise 1- Simple sequence query
Exercise 2- Advance sequence query
Exercise 3- Integrate sequence query with BLAST and FASTA
Exercise 4- Integrate sequence analysis with EMBOSS toolsWeb Page Editing with NetscapeThis 3-hour course workshop on HTML editing using the Netscape Communicator 4 Editor. In the workshop, students would be doing the following exercises:
Exercise 1 - Create a document, try colors, fonts, bullets lists etc.
Exercise 2 - Create targets and hyperlinks
Exercise 3 - Create a table
Exercise 4 - Using image files in your document
Exercise 5 - Uploading your document to the serverPre-requisite: Attendants must have the HKUSUA computer account.
Using CGI Programs in Web PagesThis is a 3-hour course on using CGI programs in Web Pages. Contents include:
Exercise 1 - Running CGI program on the web server
Exercise 2 - Imbedding CGI programs in a web form
Exercise 3 - Putting a counter in a homepage
Exercise 4 - Putting a guestbook in a homepagePre-requisite: Basic HTML Editing. Attendants must have the HKUSUA computer account.
Courses on Parallel Programming
This course is suitable for researchers and their assistants who need to run programs with very long execution time. By parallelizing and executing the program in a computer cluster environment, the execution time may be reduced significantly, for example, from 2 days to 2 hours. Students must have programming experience in either C or Fortran.
The course is designed for our HKUHPCC environment which consists of 2 PC-clusters of 32 nodes and 7 nodes, where each node is of dual CPU architecture. For technical details on HKUHPCC cluster, please refer to: http://www.itservices.hku.hk/ccsystem/hkuhpcc.
Flash ($500)This 2-day course is designed for students who want to learn how to use Macromedia Flash 5, to produce special effects and animation, for a multimedia homepage. It can help users produce web pages with vector and bitmap graphics, motion, MP3 audio, and user interaction.

7. Creating Interactive HomepageAdobe Photoshop 6 ($500)This is a 2-day course on using the Adobe Photoshop, a software for photo retouching, image editing and color painting.
Adobe Photoshop 6.0 has many enhanced features in auto-updating of formats, multiple layers control, digital watermarks for copyright, effects filters, and other enhancements for control of quality etc.Course outline :

9. 3D/4D Adding Depth and MotionAdobe Pagemaker 6.5 ($500)This is a 2-day course on using the Adobe PageMaker 6.5, a desktop publishing software. The final output can be used for mass printing directly.
Course outline:
1. Basic concept on computer desktop publishing
2. Creating accurate layout
3. Importing other documents including texts and graphics
4. Text Objects: text blocks and text frames
5. Using master items for long documents
6. Uses of styles
7. Creating the table of contents
Notes for Registration:1. Since courses on PC software are organised in conjunction with a course vendor, there is a nominal charge on the course.
For courses requiring a fee, please send payment to the Computer Centre as soon as you have registered on the web, otherwise your registration is considered invalid. Payment can be made in cheque (payable to the University of Hong Kong), or through departmental requisition (for applicants supported by departments). Once accepted, the fee is not refundable. However, substitution of participant is possible by written notification to the Centre.
The Computer Centre reserves the right to cancel the courses if there is insufficient enrollment. Applicants will be notified by email or telephone of the course cancellation and all course fees collected will be refunded in full.
Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail or telephone at least one week before the commencement of the course.
