The Computer Centre is pleased to announce the launching of a wireless
channel for HKUESD services
soon. This new service is a joint effort of the University's
E-Business
Technology Institute (ETI) and the Computer Centre utilizing ETI’s
technology innovation “Safe Connect” for accessing HKUESD using a mobile
phone with Java capabilities (Java phone).
What are the HKUESD services available on mobile phones?
The initial services made available for mobile access are:
-
Booking of Amenities Centre facilities offered by the Office of Student
Affairs (including enquiry of booking details and cancellation of booking).
Other services will be made available when they are wireless-enabled.
What is “Safe Connect” technology?
“Safe Connect” is a server assisted PKI technology developed by ETI at
the support of Government ITF funding. It is a technology that enhances
wireless security by enabling mobile devices to process open standard X.509
digital certificates with or without going through a gateway that does
PKI calculations. Safe Connect has also embedded with transcoding technology,
keystore tools and web browser that are specific modules applied in the
deployment of wireless HKUESD applications.
Who are the users?
The new service is open to students and will be extended to staff members
in the future when more wireless HKUESD applications are available.
What devices can be used?
Java phone models Nokia 7650, Nokia 3650. (More Java phone models
will be added after testing.)
How to do the installation on the Java phone?
-
An installation program will be downloadable for extracting the private-key
of HKU digital certificate (HKU-Cert) into a keystore on a notebook computer.
The keystore and the wireless HKUESD client software will be transferred
by infra-red to the Java phone. Detailed instruction of installation
will be posted at the HKUESD web
site.
-
Users can also bring their Java phone and HKU-Cert CD-R to the service
counter of the PC laboratory at Room 134A of the Old Library Building where
the Computer Centre staff on duty will help with the installation.
An introductory course on “Wireless Access to HKUESD Services” will
be held on May 21, 2003 (9:30a.m. to 11a.m.) to introduce to interested
users on the concept of “Safe Connect” and how to install the private-key
to a Java phone. All university members are welcome.
For any enquiries of “Safe Connect”, please contact the undersigned.
