Upgrade of HARNET Internet Service in March 2010

As reported in ITS News No. 141, the HARNET-Internet connection had been upgraded from 840Mbps to 1.2Gbps on 1 September 2009. The upgrade enables the JUCC institutions to better accommodate the growing demand for Internet bandwidth to support their teaching, learning and research activities.

Through a recent tendering exercise arranged through the Joint Universities Computer Centre (JUCC), a new service provider, Wharf T&T was selected to be the Internet service provider for HARNET-Internet service starting from March 2010.  Under the new contract, the HARNET-Internet bandwidth will be further upgraded from 1.2Gbps to 1.5Gbps.

The new service provider is now working on the fiber lead-in service to HKU datacenter for enabling HARNET's Internet connectivity and is expected to complete before the Chinese New Year.  After that, the HARNET backbone equipment configuration work and testing will be carried out followed by the actual migration to be done in late February 2010 as scheduled.

We shall keep you informed of the project progress in the next issue.
