Training News
The following are the training courses arranged by the Computer Centre till June 2010 to help our staff and students learn how to use the various software and services. Most courses are open to HKU staff and students free of charge. Some courses are provided by a course vendor and a fee is charged for these courses (e.g. the Microsoft Office series and other PC software). Click on the course title to see the description of each course.

Course Descriptions Courses on Web Page Browsing and Authoring
Introduction to Web Page Editing
This is a 2-hour course workshop on introduction to HTML Editing using Microsoft Expression Web. In workshop, you will learn how to
- create a web page using Microsoft Expression Web.
- enter and format text in Microsoft Expression Web.
- create and maintain hyperlinks to pages on other sites.
- using tables to arrange data.
- insert, resize and position images.
- transfer your web page to the web.hku.hk server.
Pre-requisite: Attendee must have an account on web.hku.hk (hkusua) server.
A web.hku.hk account is automatically created for all new students at the time of registration at HKU.
Staff can create their own web.hku.hk account as follows:
Login HKU Portal at http://hkuportal.hku.hk
=> Click the Services tab
=> Click the link Apply for Personal Web Account and fill in the electronic form.
Courses on Running Statistics SoftwareIntroduction to SPSS for Windows
This is a 2.5-hour workshop serves as a introduction to SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) for Windows PC. Attendants are expected to have knowledge on statistics as the course does not cover statistical concepts or how to carry out statistical analysis. You will learn how to use SPSS for Windows to read input data as well as to perform some simple statistical analysis by pointing and clicking the mouse. Contents include:
- Getting Started with SPSS for Windows
- Setting up an SPSS data file
- Importing and exporting data
- Creating and editing simple charts
- Using COMPUTE function to create new variables
- Recoding existing variables
- Simple Statistical Procedures
Courses on Unix System and ApplicationsIntroduction to Unix
This is a 3-hour introductory course for users with little or no Unix experience. The course will cover the Unix computing environment, the Unix file system, the editor, email, disk quota allocations and commonly used Unix commands.
Matlab is an integrated computing environment for numeric computation and visualization. This 3-hour seminar will give an introduction on using Matlab in numerical analysis, matrix computation and graphics etc.
Courses on Scientific Computation & Visualization
Parallel Programming with workshop
This course is suitable for researchers and their assistants who need to run programs with very long execution time. By parallelizing and executing the program in a computer cluster environment, the execution time may be reduced significantly, for example, from 2 days to 2 hours. Students must have programming experience in either C or Fortran.
The course is designed for our HKUHPCC Linux environment which consists of a PC-cluster of 356 CPUs (178 nodes of dual CPU architecture). For technical details on HKUHPCC cluster, please refer to: http://www.itservices.hku.hk/ccsystem/hkuhpcc.
PV-WAVE is a software that provides an integrated comprehensive visual data analysis environment to analyze/present scientific data in various graphical formats. The software is currently available on the Linux and Microsoft Windows platform, and is supplied by Visual Numerics, the company that also supplies the well-known scientific library IMSL (International Mathematical and Statistical Libraries).
In this course, the capability and fundamental concept of the software will be highlighted. File input and output, simple 2-D and 3-D visualization, together with other topics including animated picture show and programming within PV-WAVE will also be discussed.
Courses on e-Learning Support System
Developing Online Courses with Blackboard/WEBCT Vista (Basic)
This workshop will introduce the Blackboard/WebCT for online course development. Contents include:
- the user interface of edit and teach functions
- simple 'Quickstart' page to start off a new course
- Windows like browse function for uploading course notes and files
- how to set up assignment and assessment
- how to send email to students within Blackboard
This workshop aims at helping first time course developers of Blackboard to get started with the common tools to develop their online courses.
Note: The Computer Centre is supporting the Blackboard platform for hosting electronic courses for use by all University teachers but not helping individual teachers to produce web pages for their courses. Teachers shall produce and maintain the web pages for hosting Blackboard courses on their own.
Pre-requisite: Attendants must be a teacher or teaching assistant who manages Blackboard course(s). The workshop is not open to students.
Developing Online Courses with Blackboard/WEBCT Vista (Advanced)
This 2-hour workshop will cover more advanced features for course developers, e.g. student performance reports, group assignments and gradebook.
Pre-requisites: Attendants must be a teacher or teaching assistant who manages Blackboard course(s). The workshop is not open to students. Participants are expected to be familiar to using a Blackboard course, or have attended the workshop 'Developing Online Courses with Blackboard/WebCT (Basic)'.
Courses Provided by Outside Vendors on PC Software (Fee Required)
Designing Handy Marketing Materials Using Illustrator (Course Fee: $1,100)
In this 12-hour workshop, users will learn some basic skills on designing single-page or multi-folded brochures, leaflets and newsletters, by drawing graphics freehand, organizing text flow effectively and creating vector charts with press-quality:

2. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail or telephone at least one week before the commencement of the course.

Some courses are organised in conjunction with a course vendor. There is a fee charged on these courses. For courses requiring a fee, please send payment to the Computer Centre as soon as you have registered on the web, otherwise your registration is considered invalid.
Payment can be made by either:
- cheque (payable to "The University of Hong Kong"), or
- through departmental requisition (for applicants supported by departments) as either of the following:
- by login HKU Portal (http://hkuportal.hku.hk) => "Services" tab => Order License and Goods (under Computer Centre Services)), or
- by the CC Order Form (CF-36) available at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.
Once accepted, the fee is not refundable. However, substitution of participant is possible by written notification to the Centre.
The Computer Centre reserves the right to cancel the courses if there is insufficient enrollment. Applicants will be notified by email or telephone of the course cancellation and all course fees collected will be refunded in full.
