New Site Licensing Arrangement on VMware Software

    1. Introduction
    2. Coverage
    3. Agreement Term
    4. Subscription

1. Introduction

We are pleased to inform departments that a new site licensing program on VMware software is available for subscription by departments at an attractive educational price.

VMware is a virtualization infrastructure solution which allows multiple virtual machines to run on a single physical computer and share the resources of that single computer across multiple environments. Different virtual machines can run different operating systems and multiple applications on the same physical computer.  You can visit the web site at http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/what-is-virtualization.html for more details.

2. Coverage

The site licensing programme offers a 3-year rental license of key VMware software.  Subscribing departments can enjoy use of the VMware software covered under the programme and VMware’s support service during the license period.  These include:

i)    vSphere 4 Enterprise Edition license covering the following products:

1. ESX Server 8. VMotion
2. VC Agent 9. Hot Add
3. 4-way vSMP 10. Fault Tolerance
4. vStorage API 11. Data Recovery
5. Update Manager 12. vShield Zone
6. High Availability 13. Storage VMotion
7. Thin Provisioning 14. DRS/DPM

ii)    VMware vCenter server license

iii)   Platinum support and subscription services acquired with VMware software
(Please refer to www.vmware.com/support for details of the platinum support service.)

3. Agreement Term

The three year rental period is from March 1, 2010 to February 28, 2013.  Departments joining this site licensing programme have to commit the subscription until the expiry date on February 28, 2013.  Subscription fee will be charged annually based on the VMware software and the physical no. of processors subscribed.

The fee schedule can be found under HKU Portal (login to HKU Portal => click the tab "Services" => under "Computer Centre Services",  click the link "Tender Prices").

The rights to deploy or use the VMware software will cease if departments fail to pay for the subscription fee annually and all the VMware software must be removed accordingly.  The extension of the contract after the three-year period is subject to future renewal with VMware Inc. and we anticipate that we shall continue the subscription.

4. Subscription

Departments have been informed of this site licensing arrangement.  Departments interested in subscribing the VMware software please submit a CC Order Form to the Computer Centre on or before February 19, 2010 (Friday) through the HKU Portal as follows.

Login to HKU Portal => click the tab "Services" => under "Computer Centre Services",  click the link "Order License and Goods" => "Place Order" => search for type="VMware".  The fee schedule will be displayed accordingly.

For further enquiries on the above, please feel free to contact the undersigned or ithelp@hku.hk.
