The Merriam-Webster Dictionary available on Web and HKUSUA/HKUSUB 

We are pleased to inform our users that the World Wide Web and the command line versions of the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Tenth Edition have been installed on our host systems hkusua and hkusub.

The web version of this dictionary provides a search screen where you can enter the word to be searched. If the word is found, the directory will return the following information, otherwise, a list of similar words will be given.

• Main Entry (enter your word here and then click the Search button)
• Pronunciation
• Function (noun, verb, adverb etc.)
• Inflected Form(s) (variations on the word)
• Etymology: (history of the word)
• Date (the century when the word first appeared)
• Meanings
• Synonyms

Clicking the Thesaurus button will give you more synonyms of the word. Clicking the Clear button will allow you to enter another word to be searched.

To use the web version of the Webster Dictionary, please visit the URL: http://hkusub.hku.hk/cgi-bin/mweb.

To use the command line version of this Wester Dictionary, type the following commands after logging in HKUSUA or HKUSUB system,

mweb word-to-search

where "word-to-search" is the word to be search
