To cope with the continuously increasing demand of disk storage space on the HKU Central Information Server, the Computer Centre has increased the total amount of disk space on the server from 8GB to 18GB. For better and more efficient use of the disk space, starting from February, 1999, new accounts created on the Central Information Server, i.e. www.hku.hk, will be assigned the following default disk quota. :
(a) the disk quota for student associations/societies/clubs will be 10MB.
(b) the disk quota for residential and non-residential halls will be 20MB.
(c) the disk quota for University departments will be 30MB.
(d) the mail quota for each account on the Central Information Server will have a soft limit of 3MB and a hard limit of 4MB.
The existing users on the Central Information Server will be assigned the disk quota equivalent to its current usage. If you have exceeded your disk quota limit, you will not be able to create any files in your homepage directory. If you need more disk space for your homepage, you can apply for additional disk quota by completing the "Application for Additional Resources" (i.e. CF-101a.2 for staff and CF-101b.2 for students). For application from student bodies, endorsement from their "supervisor", usually the Office of Student Affairs or Hall warden, is required.
If you have exceeded the soft limit of your mail quota, you will get a warning message to delete some mail while you can still receive new mail. But if the hard limit of your mail quota is reached, without further warning you will not be able to receive any new mail until you have reduced the size of your mail box by deleting some old mail.
If you have any questions about the new disk space allocation, please contact the undersigned for details.
