More Wireless LAN Access Points Installed

As reported in the last issue of the News (No. 81), a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) service was launched in October.  To increase the areas of signal coverage, we have recently completed the installation of additional WLAN access points at the following sites, where exhibitions or other events requiring Campus Network/Internet connection are often held:

- The Run Run Shaw covered podium
- The Haking Wong covered podium
- K. K. Leung G/F concourse

How to use

Parties who are interested in making use of the Wireless LAN facilities may refer to the User Guide for HKU Wireless Local Area Network.  Below is an extract of the procedure:

  1. For each PC to be connected to the WLAN, a Wireless Network Interface Card (wireless NIC) is required. There are 2 kinds of wireless NICs, one for desktop PCs (called ISA CardLINK), another for notebook PCs (called PC CardLINK).  Departments or student union societies can loan the wireless NIC for notebook PCs from the Computer Centre General Office (Rm 223, Run Run Shaw Bldg.).
  2. Install the wireless NIC in the PC.
  3. Install the wireless NIC driver in the PC.
  4. Reboot the PC, then follow the procedure for signing on the ACEnet (see http://www.hku.hk/local/cc/acenet/own-conn.htm#login-acenet ) to access the Campus Network/Internet.
Please contact the undersigned for query about the Wireless LAN service.
