The HARNET (Hong Kong Academic and Research Network) is managed and operated by the JUCC (Joint Universities Computer Centre) to provide information and communication resources to JUCC Members.
The Computer Centre has worked closely with the JUCC member institutions to perform a major upgrade of the HARNET and Internet link to the U.S. in August, 2000 to cope with the ever increasing Internet bandwidth demand.
By mid-August 2000, the inter-institution network links of HARNET was upgraded from two ATM links of 20Mbps to 30Mbps. The HARNET-Internet connection was upgraded from a 12Mbps IPLC (International Private Leased Circuit) plus a 12Mbps Netplus connection from HK Telecom to a 48Mbps (guaranteed minimum 24Mbps) ATM PVC (private virtual circuit) from ISP GlobalOne.
Our users should notice the improved speed of access to local sites in Hong Kong as well as overseas sites via the Internet.
According to the plan of JUCC, HARNET's dedicated connections to Internet2,
CERNET (China Education and Research Network) and TANET (Taiwan Academic
Network) are proposed and preliminary studies are already underway. We
will inform our users of any further progress at a later date.
