New Servers for Supporting Digital Signature Applications

We are pleased to inform our users that two new Sun E3500 servers (HKUCA/HKUESD) have recently been installed to
support our newly rolled-out HKU Certification Authority and HKU Electronic Service Delivery.

The Certification Authority (HKUCA) server is used to issue and manage the digital certificates (HKU-Cert) for our users.
Digital Certificates are required in the processing of digital signature applications through the University Campus Network and
Internet.  The  Electronic Service Delivery (HKUESD) server is used to run ESD applications that are being developed.  For
instance, ESD software can be developed to transform a service request form which used to require your written signature to a
web-based form that can accept your digital signature for identity verification purpose.

Subject to the agreement of the respective administration and service authorities in the University, many existing procedures
that we regularly use in our daily University activities can potentially be converted to the more convenient and efficient
electronic services, e.g. purchase of laser-printing units and computer supplies from the Computer Centre and the submission
of grant and allowance applications, election of provident fund investment options, etc. to the related offices. With the addition
of the two new servers, we are better equipped in preparing for all these exciting potential developments.
