Update on Networking and Video-conferencing Facilities in the Renovated Rayson Huang Theatre

With the completion of the renovation of the Rayson Huang Theatre in September, we are pleased to announce that a wireless local area network service (WLAN) has been installed and put into production in the renovated theatre.

The WLAN service covers the entire interior of the 320-seats theatre, together with its conjunctive foyer and reception area.  The WLAN product deployed is the same as the one we adopted for our newly launched Classroom WLAN service, i.e. the IEEE 802.11b standard compliant ORINOCO by Lucent Technologies (also known as WaveLAN).  Procedure of use follows that for the general Classroom WLAN.  Readers seeking more information are therefore referred to the article Update on Wireless LANs for Centrally Time-tabled Classrooms and the associated User Guide for HKU Wireless Local Area Network, both appearing in this issue of the Computer News.

Besides WLAN, the theatre stage is also furnished with traditional cable-based UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) network points which support 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet connection.

Video-conferencing equipment and live web-casting facilities for the lecture theatre as reported in our last edition of the News are in the process of installation.
