From
The Help Desk... Launching your Personal Website
How
Can I have a Personal Website?
Any
HKU staff member or student can have a personal website on the HKUSUA server.
Since the personal webpages are stored on the HKUSUA server, you must have
an account on this server.
If you
do not have an account on the HKUSUA system, you can create this account
yourself
on-line at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/services/forms.htm.
If this is your first host
computer account, then click the hyperlink "Host
computer account". If you already have a host computer account
on the HKUCC system, then click the hyperlink "Additional
host account for staff/student".
When
you create your account on the HKUSUA system, your personal website is
automatically created in your account by the system.
Note:
For accounts created before year 2000, you must create your own website
by typing the command "createhtml" at the system prompt after you
login the Unix system via the telnet program.
Where
is my Personal Webpage Stored?
Your
personal website is kept in a directory named "public_html" in your
HKUSUA account. This is the directory where all your webpages and
picture files are kept. If any webpage or picture files are put outside
of this directory, they cannot be displayed by the browser.
To access
your personal website, simply type in the URL:
http://www.hku.hk/username/
where
username is the account name of your HKUSUA account. The URL will
change to http://web.hku.hk/~username/
If this
is the first time you are creating your website, you will find a test homepage
in there with a HKU crest, "Hello, I am <username>", and a mail link
"Please contact me".
If you see this pre-created webpage in your personal website, you know
your personal website and the default webpage named "index.html" have been
created for you.
How
do I Write My First Homepage?
The
Computer Centre offers regular training courses on how to write a webpage.
Click the link to list the scheduled courses at http://www.hku.hk/local/cc/training/courses.htm.
The
"Basic HTML Editing" course is for writing webpages with the MS FrontPage editor.
Register
for this course in the HKU Portal -> Services, under Computer
Services, click Workshop and Courses.You
can also follow the self-learning tutorial for writing webpages (using MS FrontPage) at
http://www.itservices.hku.hk/document/FrontPage/workshop.htm
After you have composed your first homepage, then save this
file as "index.html" and place this file in the "public_html" folder
in your HKUSUA account. Your own index.html file will replace
the previous file in that directory.
How
do I send my homepage to the server?
You can send your homepage to the HKUSUA server
using the FTP program.
You must use the HKU network (HKUPPP
or HKUVPN) for
sending files to your server account. When using the HKU network, your network
password is required.
Register
your Webpage with the HKU Webpage Directory
You may want to register your webpage so that other people
can find your webpage in the HKU directories. To register your webpage,
go to http://www.itservices.hku.hk/services/forms.htm
and look for the link "Personal Homepage registration".
The search function for HKU directories is located in the HKU homepage
by clicking the link "directories" at http://www.hku.hk/.
If you have any questions regarding webpage authoring, please
contact the undersigned.
