Upgrade of the HARNET-Internet
Connections
To cope with the increasing demand for Internet bandwidth to facilitate
the University's research and academic activities, the Computer Centre
has been working with the JUCC (Joint Universities Computer Centre) on
the upgrade of the HARNET-Internet connection which links the eight tertiary
institutions in Hong Kong to the Internet. The upgrade exercise is
divided into two phases:
-
The first phase is the upgrade of the existing HARNET-HKIX connection from
60Mbps to 90Mbps to cater for the local network traffic in Hong Kong.
-
The second phase is the upgrade of the HARNET-Internet link from the existing
72Mbps to 96Mbps, together with HKU-HARNET link upgrade from 40Mbps to
54Mbps.
The whole upgrade exercise is expected to be completed by the end
of August according to the planned implementation schedule.
Progress of the HARNET-Internet2 Implementation
In the last issue of the Computer News, we had reported on the status of
the HARNET-Internet2 connection. According to the latest information, there
will be a slight delay in completing the implementation, and we are expecting
the Internet2 connection to be ready by the end of September this year.
