Annual Report 2010-2011 of Information Technology Services Available Online
We have now finalized the 2010-2011 Information Technology Services (ITS) Annual Report. In order to clearly demonstrate how we contribute to the University’s mission and strategic priorities, the report is aligned with the University’s document “Strategic Development 2009-2014”. The report is available for viewing at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/annual_report/10-11/AnnualReport.pdf and I encourage you to have a look. The document contains an Executive Summary that will give you an overview of the key achievements.
Much was achieved during the 2010-2011 year. Together with our partners in Registry, Finance and Human Resources, and with the assistance of external consulting firms, we went live with a new Oracle/PeopleSoft Student Information System (SIS), a new Human Capital Management System (HCMS), and a new Enterprise Portal. Although there are always issues with installing such large and complex systems, the student information system (SIS) went live in October 2010 and is now stable. The HCM team focused on the HCMS system for which Phase A went live in April 2011.
In June 2011, Senate endorsed a recommendation to replace the WebCT learning management system with Moodle. This was and will continue to be another big change for the University because it affects all students and academic staff.
IT infrastructure constantly needs to be upgraded, replaced and expanded to cope with the increased use by both staff and students. Given the strategic importance of IT infrastructure and associated services to the day-to-day operation of the University, the management of IT infrastructure needs to continuously improve and mature. We made significant progress in the adoption of the internationally-recognised IT Service Management Framework called ITIL.
I was delighted with our success at the Hong Kong Information & Communication Technology (HKICT) awards held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in April 2011. We won a Gold Award for one stream in the Green ICT category. This award reflects the excellent work of our team to reduce our environmental impact. In the Professional Development category, we won the Gold Award for one stream and the Grand Award across all streams! This latter award was for our commitment to professional development associated with the implementation of the ITIL IT Service Management Framework. This is great reflection of the work of the staff of ITS.
