Email Accounts for Graduating Students of 2013

Free Email Accounts for HKU Graduates

Students’ HKU Portal account will expire upon graduation; but they may continue to use the email service provided by the University.  All graduating students will be notified by email in the next few months the expiry of their HKU Portal accounts; and things that they need to know regarding their HKU Connect graduate email accounts.

For students who are already using the HKU Connect Email Service, there will be no change to their email accounts after their graduation.  The only difference in this regard is that the simplified email address UID@hku.hk and the email auto-forwarding rule from UID@hku.hk to UID@connect.hku.hk will become invalid.

For students who are still using the in-house email service, i.e. HKUSU1 or HKUSUC accounts, a HKU Connect graduate email account will be automatically created for them upon expiry of the HKU Portal account on their graduation.  In other words, students are NOT required to apply for a graduate email account.  The HKU Connect graduate email account has the same user name and password as the corresponding in-house student email account (i.e. HKU Portal UID/PIN).  For a student with email address “UID@hku.hk” and password (HKU Portal PIN) “abcd1234”, the user name and password of the HKU Connect graduate email account will be “UID@connect.hku.hk” and “abcd1234” respectively.  This group of students should do the following prior to the expiry of their portal accounts –

  1. copy emails, contacts and files from the student account (@hku.hk) to the graduate account (@connect.hku.hk) once it is created if such data has to be kept for use.  The procedures can be found at http://www.its.hku.hk/documentation/guide/email/connect/graduates#four; and

  2. change the account password once by choosing "I want to change the password (for graduates)" inside https://ids.hku.hk/idp/forgetpassword.html if they want to access the HKU Connect email account through channels other than http://webmail.hku.hk (e.g., from smartphone).

All students are reminded, where applicable, to notify friends and acquaintances the change of email address from UID@hku.hk to UID@connect.hku.hk and cancel all mailing list subscriptions prior to the expiry of the HKU Portal account.

How about the Network Service?

Access to the HKU campus network and roaming networks (i.e., "Universities WiFi", "eduroam", "Universities via PCCW", "Universities via Y5ZONE" and HKUVPN) will no longer be possible for graduates. When visiting the University, they may use the “HKU Open WiFi” service for making connection to the campus network.
