Polycom
ViewStation FX
The Computer Centre has 3 sets of IP-based video conferencing
systems, Polycom ViewStation FX, available for loan by the
departments. With these video conferencing systems, you can
do IP-based video conferencing via the Campus Network with
any party that has a Campus Network or Internet connection.
The system is easy to manipulate and departments can follow
the procedures on setting up Polycom
ViewStation FX to set up video conferencing sessions themselves.

Multipoint Control
Unit (MCU)
Most video conferencing systems only provide point-to-point
video conferencing sessions. If your conference
have more than two parties, or the parties run on different
protocols (e.g. IP vs ISDN), we will use a Multipoint Control
Unit (MCU) to bring the video conferencing parties together
to achieve multipoint video conferencing.
With the MCU, different conferencing parties connect to the
same system (i.e. the MCU) and see each other on their own
screens. Since there can be a mix of IP and ISDN parties
in one conferencing session, ISDN connectivity is virtually
brought to parties with only IP connections (only that unlike
ISDN, no dedicated bandwidth is reserved for IP network traffic).
Our MCU supports a maximum of :
- 6 simultaneous connections
- 6 simultaneous IP connections at 768Kbps each
- 3 simultaneous ISDN connections at 384Kbps each (there
can, however, be a mix of incoming and outgoing ISDN connections)
In addition, there is a choice of nice screen layouts, e.g.
continuous presence (all parties appearing on screen), lecture
mode (only the speaking party appearing) etc.
As in the case of ISDN-based video-conferencing system above,
ISDN calls made from the MCU are subject to charges to be
borne by the department using the service.
