The HKU WiFi Network is an extension
of the HKU Access Everywhere Network (ACEnet) which allows
users to connect to the HKU network via radio transmission
without using network cables from centrally time-tabled classrooms,
libraries, amenities centres, PC laboratories, offices and
open areas in the main campus.
The University has been deploying WiFi network since late last century, which supported equipment of IEEE 802.11b (bandwidth up to 11Mbps) and 802.11g (up to 54Mbps) standards. Since 20080/2009, the Computer has been setting up a new WiFi system compatible with the new IEEE 802.11n standard which is capable of supporting over 100Mbps bandwidth. IEEE 802.11n is a newly approved WiFi standard providing a much faster wireless computing experience and increased signal range. Moreover, the new Access Points support the industry standard 802.1x security protocol and multiple network identifies (SSID) which improves the security and manageability of the WiFi system.

Security
To ensure secure connection, establish your connection with
the campus network through the HKUVPN gateway (see
http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/networks/vpn.htm for procedure
of configuring HKUVPN on your PC ). VPN (Virtual Private
Networking) technology uses tunnelling and encryption to provide
for a secure connection over network.
Locations of
Service Set Identifier (SSID)
Outside the HKU campus, one can acess the Internet via:
HKU Guest WiFi Service
Departments can apply for the HKU WiFi Guest Account by completing and returning the application form CF-156 "Application for HKU WiFi Guest Account" to us. The form is available at http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/services/forms.htm.
Please submit the application at least 5 working days before the conference/lecture starts.
For the connection procedures, please refer to http://www.itservices.hku.hk/home/networks/wifi/hkuguest/
Note 1:
Access to the following
Internet services from the HKU campus does not require logging
in the HKUVPN, ACEnet, WiFi or Hall network as long
as your network card is registered:
- E-mail (POP3/IMAP)
- WWW (http/https)
- Streaming media (Microsoft Media Player & Real Player)
- FTP (file transfer program)
- ICQ connection (default TCP ports: 6667/5190)
- MSN Messenger connection (default TCP port: 1863)
- Yahoo Messenger connection (default TCP port: 5050)
- VPN connection (default TCP port: 1723/UDP port:500)
- Skype connection (default TCP port: 80/443)
Note 2:
If you change your network card, you have to de-register the
old network card and then register the new one. If you sell
your network card to another University member, remember to
de-register it first. In case the previous owner of your network
card has left the University, you can request the Computer
Centre to change the ownership of your network card by filling
in application form CF-29
"Request for Changing Registered Owner of Network Card".
