You might have noticed that the HKU Web Service was very slow on August 7, 2006 starting from about 1:30pm. The heavy loading was initially anticipated as our second-year students were doing their course selection while the hall applications were also underway at the same time. Incidentally someone had connected a wrong cable to the network in one of the classrooms in the Run Run Shaw Building that created a loop in the classroom virtual local area network (VLAN) which had resulted in instability throughout the campus network.

Our colleagues had responded and isolated the network looping problem quite quickly by about 2:30pm, but the web service traffic had already built up and the system response was slow. We had proceeded to implement other measures to help solve the web congestion problems including the deployment of an additional server as a contingency measure.

All the web services had returned to acceptable response by about 1 a.m. on August 8, 2006. We have been monitoring the network and the systems closely on August 8, 2006 and both the system and network performance had returned to acceptable levels.
